Current Landscape

Lord Darzi’s recent review emphasises the need for Integrated Care Systems (ICS) within the NHS to prioritise community-based and preventive care, streamline governance and increase funding, especially in social care. The report calls for simplifying the complex network of NHS administrative bodies into regional Health and Care Authorities, which would drive local priorities and focus on reducing hospital dependency. This reform aims to address systemic challenges, such as rising demand due to an ageing population and chronic underfunding of social care, by shifting care from hospitals to community settings and by emphasising preventive care

Importance and Timeliness of the event

This conference is essential, given the system's current pressures and the need for sustainable transformation. They provide a crucial forum for addressing challenges like increasing patient demand, stretched budgets, and staff shortages, allowing healthcare professionals, policymakers, and innovators to collaboratively explore solutions. Amid mounting calls for the NHS to shift from hospital-centred to preventive, community-focused care, these gatherings help stakeholders align on priorities, examine best practices and explore new care models and technologies. This collaborative environment enables the development of strategic, system-wide reforms that can directly address the NHS’s most urgent needs, fostering resilience and innovation in a pivotal period for UK healthcare.

Key content streams:

  • Whole-System Workforce Collaboration: Strategies for cross-organisational workforce alignment in ICSs to address local health needs and optimise resources.
  • Community-Centred Preventative Care: Approaches for prioritising neighbourhood-based, preventive care through local partnerships.
  • Improving Productivity and Efficiency: Methods for streamlining care delivery and aligning financial incentives to boost productivity.
  • Cross-disciplinary coordination/collaboration on Promoting Health Equity: Initiatives with local governments and third-sector partners to reduce health disparities and improve access.
  • Leveraging Technology and Innovation: Exploring how technology aids ICSs in managing complexity, increasing efficiency, and supporting data-driven care.
