Innovating through backlogs conference: The NHS Surgery Conference 2022
Surgical innovation has an essential role in surgical practice. Over the last 50 years, in particular, innovations have improved patient outcomes, and reduced complication rates and length of hospital stay, all while decreasing morbidity and mortality. Of course, this carries risks without proper evaluation, governance and training.
We are in truly exciting times for NHS innovation, the recent pandemic has provided the perfect catalyst for innovation scale-up, and surgery departments are not missing out on the party.
The Royal College of Surgeons recently published their Future of Surgery blueprint which provides an exciting look at the technology and services being implemented across surgery departments and the impact it is having on staff and patients alike.
The plans identify 4 core technologies that will drive this future surgical landscape: Minimally invasive surgery, Imaging (AR/VR), Big data/ Genomics and Specialist interventions.
These advancements in technology are timely as the NHS faces its biggest backlog in planned surgery to date, the number of patients awaiting treatment hit a record high of 4.46 million in November 2020.
Our upcoming NHS Surgery Conference 2021: Innovating through backlogs will provide a platform for NHS based surgeons to listen and learn about the new policies and best practices while networking and sharing insights with NHS based and international peers.
