Current Landscape and Challenges

Diagnostics and healthcare science services in Wales are entering a period of significant transformation. With a relatively small, highly connected system, Wales is uniquely positioned to deliver coordinated, national approaches to pathology, community diagnostics and healthcare science-led innovation.

However, challenges remain. An ageing population, increasing levels of deprivation and significant rurality continue to place pressure on service delivery and equitable access. Variability across health boards, workforce sustainability concerns and the complexity of cross-border working with England present ongoing barriers to consistency and performance.

At the same time, national infrastructure such as laboratory information systems and diagnostic frameworks are evolving, while large-scale structural changes across health and social care leadership are creating both uncertainty and opportunity. The system must now balance stability with transformation, ensuring that diagnostics services can meet growing demand while supporting wider population health objectives.

Timeliness of the Event

This conference takes place at a critical moment for diagnostics and healthcare science in Wales. With ongoing reform across health and social care structures, the establishment of new national leadership functions and the continued development of diagnostic frameworks, there is a clear need for alignment between strategy and delivery.

At the same time, national programmes such as point of care testing and community-based diagnostics are gaining momentum, supported by evidence-led approaches and system-wide collaboration. As Wales continues to shape its approach to diagnostics, this event provides a timely platform to bring together national leaders, healthcare scientists, clinicians and operational teams to share insight, align priorities and support implementation.

Summit Focus:

  • Understanding how diagnostics and healthcare science are being coordinated across the Welsh system
  • Aligning national strategy with delivery across health boards and regional services
  • Exploring the role of point of care testing and community diagnostics in improving access and outcomes
  • Addressing workforce challenges, visibility and sustainability within healthcare science
  • Tackling variation across regions while supporting standardisation and system-wide consistency
  • Navigating cross-border challenges between Wales and England, including data and service alignment
  • Leveraging diagnostics to support population health, prevention and long-term system planning
  • Sharing practical insight from national programmes and real-world delivery across Wales

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • A clear understanding of how diagnostics and healthcare science are structured and delivered across Wales
  • Insight into national priorities, frameworks and programmes shaping the future of pathology and diagnostics
  • Practical examples of how services are adapting to meet demand in rural and complex environments
  • Strategies for implementing point of care testing and community diagnostics at scale
  • Approaches to strengthening workforce capacity, capability and visibility
  • Understanding of cross-border considerations and how they impact service delivery
  • Opportunities to connect with peers across health boards, national organisations and government

Why Attend?

Diagnostics Wales 2027 is designed as a national, system-led forum bringing together leaders from across Welsh Government, NHS Executive, Public Health Wales, health boards and healthcare science.

Unlike traditional conferences, this event focuses on practical delivery, collaboration and shared learning within the Welsh context. With a highly connected system and strong national leadership, Wales offers a unique opportunity to bring together stakeholders from across the entire diagnostics ecosystem in one room.

Attendees will benefit from direct access to national leaders, real-world case studies and open discussion around the challenges and opportunities shaping diagnostics across Wales. This is an opportunity to contribute to a shared national conversation, build meaningful connections and support the future direction of pathology and healthcare science services.
