Andrea Bracewell

Specialist Midwife
H. M. Prison Service (County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust)

Andrea started her midwifery career five years ago, working in a local hospital. She then worked as a Community Midwife for two and a half years. Andrea was attached to a busy GP practice, and her caseload included the care of women & families with multiple complex needs – with local services including mother & baby supported accommodation; women’s refuges and vulnerable women’s projects. This incited a keen interest in the care provision for vulnerable women and families.

Andrea delivers training on Perinatal & Infant Mental Health for Midwives and has specialist knowledge on the management of drug misuse in primary care. She is a lead on the HMP Perinatal MDT and is currently working on updating both HMP Low Newton’s “Perinatal Pathway” and CDDFT’s “Maternity Care Pathway for Women Residing in Prison”.

Andrea has received a CDDFT Travel Award towards a trip to Holland in October 2019. The trip will include visits to Female Prisons to observe the care of perinatal women and their babies, and to learn examples of good practice that could influence our care in female estates within the UK.
