Until July 2024 he was Minister of State for Health and Secondary Care in the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). He the Minister responsible for NHS workforce: recruitment and retention, supply, education and training, leadership, pay and pensions and overall lead for industrial relations. This included him serving as Chair of the NHSE Long Term Workforce Plan Programme Board. Before joining the DHSC, he was a Minister in several other government departments (Business, Cabinet Office, Foreign Office, Health, Housing and Transport) and an MP for 14 years. In his spare time he is a North West Ambulance Service Community First Responder.
