Consultant in Emergency Medicine & Deputy Clinical Director
Emergency Unit, University Hospital of Wales
Dr Chen Wen Ngua is an emergency physician in the Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, where he also holds the departmental leads for digital transformation and for performance. He is an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University.
His practice centres on the delivery of high-quality emergency care to an undifferentiated, high-acuity population, and his interest in digital systems has grown out of that clinical experience. He has long held the view that technology should reduce the administrative burden on clinicians, and that the market has been slow to produce affordable, well-designed tools that genuinely support the clinician's role at the point of care. His central interest is clinical workflow, and how digital systems can be designed to support it rather than interrupt it.
Most recently he has been Clinical Lead for Project TAFF, the digitisation of Emergency Unit documentation at UHW, spanning triage, rapid assessment & treatment (RATZ), clerking and progress documentation. The emphasis throughout has been clinical workflow: mapping how the department genuinely operates before deciding on the software specification, designing entry and review around the clinician at the bedside, and building clinical safety and business continuity in from the outset.
