Following University, Katie began her NHS career in 2003 at Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Primary Care Trust. Whilst there, she supported primary care in service development and modernisation, before progressing into the field of research governance. By 2005, Katie had moved to Staffordshire and became the Deputy Manager for Research and Development working at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country, where she was successful in writing numerous bids to the National Health Institute for Research and being awarded millions of pounds of funding to pump prime research. This led to Katie developing a reputation for having a passion for improving patient care and after leading the management of research governance across the West Midlands, her career progressed to her becoming Research, Business and Innovations Manager at Birmingham Childrens’ Hospital in 2008. Here she was involved in all aspects of childrens’ research, including exciting opportunities to work with McClaren Formula 1 on building new innovative systems for Intensive Care Units and ground breaking international clinical trials.
After reaching the ceiling in her research career, Katie took the decision to head back to her Yorkshire roots and work in the field of commissioning. After 18 months, she was promoted to the Acting Head of Service Transformation, covering a plethora of services across planned and unplanned care. It is here that she developed a real passion for urgent care and a focus remained on improving patient experience across the Barnsley district, leading a team that won 3 awards including a HSJ and subsequently resulted in her presenting at The Kings Fund amongst many others. During this time, Katie successfully secured a place on the Elizabeth Garett Anderson course at the NHS Leadership Academy in 2016, where she gained a leadership qualification and is finalising her Masters degree in Health and Care Leadership through the University of Birmingham.
Realising that her career to date was NHS focussed, she took the position of MCP Programme Manager at Wakefield CCG on a secondment to broaden her knowledge of multi-organisational system working, before taking on her current role as Head of Urgent Care for North Kirklees and Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Groups.
An energetic, innovative and ambitious senior manager, with 16 years’ experience in strategic and operational roles. Katie is outcomes focussed with a passion for service excellence and enabling person centred integrated care. Katie has a substantial experience of leading successful district-wide, multi-organisational change programmes with complex teams.
