Current Landscape and Challenges
Ireland is entering a landmark phase in its digital transformation journey, with the Health Service Executive set to begin procurement of a national electronic health record. This programme will underpin the delivery of a more connected, patient centered health system, enabling safer, faster and more coordinated care across hospitals, primary care and community services.
At present, patient records across Ireland remain fragmented and in many cases paper based. This limits access to real time information, creates duplication and places additional burden on clinicians and patients alike. The transition to a single, integrated EHR represents a once in a generation opportunity to address these challenges and modernise how care is delivered across the system.
However, large scale EHR programmes are complex, high risk and resource intensive. Health systems globally have already undertaken similar transformations, generating valuable insight into procurement strategy, supplier engagement, governance, workforce readiness and long-term adoption.
Ireland now has a unique opportunity to draw on this collective experience. Understanding what has worked well, where challenges have emerged and how risks have been mitigated will be critical to ensuring successful procurement and implementation.
Timeliness of the Event
With procurement about to begin, this is a defining moment for Ireland’s health system. Decisions made at this stage will shape the long-term success of the programme, influencing delivery timelines, interoperability, user adoption and overall system impact.
This summit is designed to bring together leaders from across Ireland to explore the key considerations for successful EHR procurement and implementation. It focuses on practical insight, shared learning and early-stage decision making, ensuring organisations are equipped to move forward with confidence.
The conversation is shifting from ambition to execution. By focusing on delivery from the outset, Ireland can accelerate progress, avoid common pitfalls and build a resilient, future ready digital health system that delivers real value for patients, clinicians and the wider system.
