Current Landscape and Challenges:
The NHS Endoscopy Conference: Beyond the Device will delve into the significant challenges facing NHS Endoscopy services. These include an outdated infrastructure struggling to meet rising demand and contemporary standards. The situation is compounded by a shortage of staff, leading to longer waiting times and overworked personnel. Additionally, unclear leadership and fragmented oversight impede efforts to streamline services and implement cohesive strategies. There is also an urgent need to enhance connectivity, digitisation, and data sharing to improve patient outcomes, ensure efficient resource utilisation, and facilitate timely, accurate diagnoses and treatments. Addressing these issues is vital for maintaining the quality and accessibility of endoscopy services in the NHS.
Importance and Timeliness of the Event:
With dedicated endoscopy funding for 2022/23 to 2024/25, the NHS aims to upgrade infrastructure, integrate advanced technology, and invest in staff training to enhance service delivery. A key objective is that by March 2025, 95% of patients will receive their endoscopy procedure within 6 weeks, which is essential for early diagnosis and treatment, improving patient experience, and boosting operational efficiency. This conference is crucial for aligning efforts and innovations to achieve these ambitious targets, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes.
Why Attend:
This conference will serve as a catalyst for innovation and transformation in endoscopy by exploring the pathways necessary for these advancements. It is essential for coordinating efforts and innovations to meet ambitious targets, thereby significantly improving patient care and outcomes.

Keynote Presentation - How to maintain wellbeing and reduce burnout in endoscopy workforce (Confirmed)
This presentation explores the growing mental health and wellbeing challenges faced by professionals in the gastroenterology and endoscopy workforce. Drawing on recent evidence, we will highlight the significant prevalence of stress, burnout, and psychological strain within the field.
The session will then focus on practical strategies and organisational approaches to improve wellbeing, including workload management, peer support, and creating a culture of psychological safety. Finally, we will examine the role of mindfulness as an evidence-based tool to enhance mental resilience, reduce burnout, and support long-term wellbeing, backed by current research findings in clinical settings.
Equity, Quality Assurance / Improvement and Workforce: Why we need networks - Panel Discussion
Effective endoscopy services rely on equity, quality assurance, and a well-supported workforce. This panel will explore the critical role of networks in addressing disparities in access, standardizing care through quality improvement initiatives, and strengthening the workforce. Experts will discuss how collaborative networks can enhance training, share best practices, and improve patient outcomes. Attendees will gain insights into how integrated approaches can drive efficiency, reduce variability, and ensure high-quality care across the NHS.

Case Study - Increasing capacity and performance through list utilisation at scale (Confirmed)
Join Chris Thomas, CEO of Inform People Ltd, as he introduces THRIVE - a digital tool designed to transform diagnostic service performance across the NHS. With unrelenting pressures, tighter budgets, and national staffing shortages, THRIVE offers a scalable solution to improve list utilisation and increase capacity using the resources trusts already have.
Originally piloted in a single trust, THRIVE has evolved into a multi-regional performance platform now used across the North West and beyond. The system delivers live insights, supports KPI tracking, and enables best-practice sharing across teams, from frontline staff to senior management.
In this session, Chris will share the journey behind THRIVE’s development, its real-world impact on efficiency and outcomes, and how it’s helping NHS organisations make informed decisions faster. Whether you’re clinical, operational, or strategic, this session will offer valuable insight into how data can drive meaningful change - without adding complexity.

An Integrated Approach for Awake Transnasal Assessment of the Path of Swallowing (Confirmed)
Upper aerodigestive symptoms in general and dysphagia in particular, are nonspecific and poorly-localising. Significant proportions of patients are therefore investigated by several disciplines and there is a notable incidence of itnerspecialty missed cancers.
We have created an integrated pathway with input from gastroenterology, upper gastrointestinal surgery, ENT surgery, and respiratory medicine to help standardise diagnostic pathway initiation. This treats upper aerodigestive presentations as “nonspecific” symptoms and uses the approach that has been successfully adopted by the Nonspecific Symptoms Pathway.
Using mindfulness-based patient support, leveraging frugal digital innovations, and harnessing advances in endoscopy technique, Transnasal Panendoscopy provides a one-stop assessment of the full path of swallowing in awake patients attending outpatient appointments, avoiding a general anaesthetic and a sedation procedure.

Presentation - Building the workforce to bridge the gap between primary and secondary care (Confirmed)
This talk will explore the NHS England-supported gastroenterology GPwER (GP with extended role) training programme which is developing clinicians who can help to deliver the NHS’s desired left-shift of care from hospital to community within gastroenterology.
This programme follows the national GPwER in gastroenterology training framework co-authored and approved by the BSG and PCSG in October 2024, and a full evaluation of the programme including an independent cost analysis has been carried out to evaluate the potential benefits of this role for the wider healthcare system which will be discussed further during this talk.
Current GPwER-led services nationally provide a model for the role, and these services will be discussed further during this talk.
Presentation - Building the workforce to bridge the gap between primary and secondary care (Confirmed)
This talk will pick up on the thread of Dr Charlie Andrews focus that current GPwER-led services nationally provide a model for the role by looking at the ‘CASES’ referral review system in Sheffield where special interest GPs review referrals before they are passed to secondary care.
Presentation - Rewriting Pathways of Care (Confirmed)
Ed discusses why endoscopy lends itself to improvement, and demonstrates examples of pathway improvement both in endoscopy and the importance of recognising that factors that feed into endoscopy (such as outpatient flow) need to be considered as a way of managing both capacity and demand within endoscopy
Designing Effective Pathways Panel Discussion
This panel discussion delves into optimising endoscopy services by exploring streamlined procedures, technology integration, and patient-centric approaches. Featuring insights from leading experts and real-world case studies, the session will cover best practices for enhancing patient flow, improving operational efficiency, and implementing quality improvement initiatives and provide actionable strategies to elevate endoscopy services and achieve superior patient outcomes.
