Alan Davies MBA
Director of Innovative Programmes and Partnerships
Health Education England
in 2019 HEE published the Topol Report recommending action to enable the health and care workforce to better make use of rapidly maturing innovative digital technologies. This session will cover some of the progress made since via HEE’s DART-ED programme focussing particularly on the AI and Robotic Surgery areas.

At home diagnostics: Revolutionising endoscopy services
Ben Panton
Senior Digital Partnerships Manager
NHS Arden & GEM CSU
Each year, over 2 million endoscopies are scheduled to take place through the NHS. This growing demand, combined with limited clinical capacity and additional cleaning measures, is proving increasingly challenging to meet.
In this session, we will share how innovations in technology, connectivity and pathways are helping to tackle this challenge. One such innovation is a current West Midlands trial for the self-administration of closed capsule endoscopy.
With responsibility for evaluating the trial and producing an evidence base to inform future use, NHS Arden & GEM will share the latest findings, and their implications for adjacent technologies and wider at-home diagnostics.

Designing a pharmacogenomic service for the NHS
Videha Sharma
NHS Clinician and Lecturer in Health Informatics
University of Manchester
We discuss a national NHSE funded project, which aims to design a pharmacogenomic service for the NHS. We will cover primarily the digital health aspect of the project, including:
- Data journey modelling to establish current infrastructure and socio-technical barriers to digital transformation
- Open standards to architect an interoperable pharmacogenomics platform
User-centred design to prototype workflow experiences within hospital and primary care EHRs

Case Study - Piota Healthcare Apps
Chris Elkin
Head of Healthcare
Piota Healthcare Apps
Piota is a leading provider of Healthcare Apps to the NHS.
During this session we will demonstrate how Healthcare Teams like yours are using the Piota Mobile App platform to:
- Empower their patients by providing them with valuable information about their condition, the service and local support available.
- Save valuable clinical time by making operational information readily accessible.

Patient led laboratory tests from home
Professor Timothy McDonald
Consultant Clinical Scientist/ NIHR Fellow
Royal Devon University Hospital
We have designed, developed and tested a national home finger prick blood collection and laboratory testing service. This innovation allows clinicians of Highly Specialist Services around the country to use our bespoke digital portal to request blood collecting kits to be sent directly to their patient’s home. Blood is collected by the patient from their finger following our carefully designed instructions, using custom made packs and the blood is posted directly back to the central laboratory for analysis. Results are uploaded back onto the dashboard for the clinical teams to review.

The Journey To Paperless Patient Records and Improving Business Outcomes
Nuala Mountain
Business Development Manager
Iron Mountain
Alistair Doe
Business Development Director
Iron Mountain
Iron Mountain has helped numerous NHS Trusts with their digital transformation programmes, enabling both the digitisation of legacy records and improving the visibility of patient data. During this session, they will be presenting their experience supporting Trusts in their digital journey and will share learnings and best practices for enabling more efficient and effective treatment of a greater number of patients.

Learning from crisis: Innovation in pandemic and key learnings
Stuart Hosking-Durn
Head of Central Operations
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust
Healthcare estate is widely known to be variable, in some cases no longer fit for purpose, with extensive backlog delays due to funding and finally in some cases at high risk of failure (RAAC). The future healthcare estate is complex to design, subject to frequent change as care pathways change, has affordability question marks and needs to ensure lessons learnt from the past are not repeated. The presentation will focus on lessons learnt from real incidents and events that Stuart has been involved in over 20 years of professional practice, whereby design and construction decisions resulted in an undesired outcome which had a direct impact on care, service delivery and unexpected costs.

Digitalising patient flow – the barriers and how to overcome them
Dr Michael Watts
Associate CCIO
University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Trust
A raw and honest discussion around the barriers to innovation when digitalising the patient flow processes. From interoperability to patient safety, procurement to financing, I will explore the do’s and the don’t’s to successfully implementing digital services for a more efficient NHS Trust. This talk is for the NHS Intrapreneur wanting to improve flow services at their hospital, and for Senior NHS leaders, who want to learn about empowering thought leaders within their organisation, to bring about change.
