Dr Thomas Hewson is a junior academic doctor working at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. He graduated from Nottingham Medical School in 2018 with 1st class Honours BMedSci and his BMBS. During Tom’s time at medical school, he co-founded PsychStart: a career-based mentoring scheme for medical students interested in psychiatry. This scheme has since expanded nationally, with sister programmes being established in Cambridge and the North East. He was awarded the MedSoc Shield by medical school faculty and students for his contributions to the student body. In his final year of studies, he received a bursary from the Royal College of Psychiatrists to study forensic psychiatry with Forensicare in Australia.
He witnessed and participated in the delivery of forensic healthcare across various settings including Australian courts, prisons, a maximum-security hospital and community clinics. He has also involved in multiple research projects, achieving a BMJ publication from his University dissertation. Most recently, Tom has been researching decision-making in offender populations with a mental disorder, and the risk factors, characteristics and crime-scene behaviours of child and adult sexual homicide. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is also currently participating in the Health Education England Foundation Programme Review. He aspires to a future career in academic forensic psychiatry.
