James Friend joined as our Director of Delivery, Efficiency and Transformation in April 2017. James joined St George’s from the Department of Health, where he was an advisor to the Secretary of State for Health. James is an experienced commercial sector and NHS Director, having held leadership roles in providers including Epsom St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, West Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and elsewhere, alongside commissioning and system improvement leadership roles in Buckinghamshire, Sussex and Hampshire.
Prior to working in the NHS, James held a number of leadership roles in the UK and International financial services sector specialising in delivery risk management, strategy & transformation and corporate & retail relationship management.
James has been a volunteer in the NHS for over 30 years and has an in-depth understanding of the partnerships between Local Authorities and the health sector through having been a founder member of the Surrey Health and Wellbeing Board.
