Graduated from Queen Mary College in 1981 with a degree in Law and joined the Inner London Probation Service as an ancillary probation officer. After completing his Diploma in Social Work, he went on to work as a probation officer in South London including a secondment in Brixton Prison as a drug and alcohol specialist.
In 1994 he became a senior probation officer and managed a field probation team in East London before taking up a post as the development manager for substance misuse for the Inner London Probation Service.
In 1999 he joined the Drug Prevention Advisory Service as a Regional Advisor for the London team. He moved to Home Office HQ to take up a post as the project manager for the drug testing pilot programme.
He took up the post as Criminal Justice Manager for the National Treatment Agency in July 2002 and this role was transferred into the Alcohol and Drugs team in Public Health England in April 2013.
