Consultant forensic psychiatrist, Professor of Forensic Psychiatry Trinity College Dublin.  Honorary Skou professor of forensic psychiatry University of Aarhus and Hon. Visiting Professor of Forensic Psychiatry, University of Bari ‘Aldo Moro’, Italy.

I teach forensic psychiatry and am co-author of the forthcoming second edition of Seminars in Forensic Psychiatry, second edition, CUP. I publish research on triage and recovery in therapeutically safe and secure pathways (DUNDRUM toolkit) and models of care. I lead an international collaboration regarding measures of excellence in forensic psychiatry and I coordinate the international reference group for the DUNDRUM Toolkit.

Clinical Director & Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, Camlet Lodge Medium Secure Unit and Clinical Senior Lecturer, Royal Free Hospital Medical School 1992-2000 where I moved the service from a ‘legacy’ asylum to a new purpose built medium secure unit and established prison in-reach and diversion programmes.

Executive Clinical Director, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, National Forensic Mental Health Service, Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum, Dublin (2000-2022) where I e4stablished extensive prison in-reach and court diversion programmes, community after0care and supervision services and modernised the in-patient secure hospital service, eventually moving to the new purpose built secure forensic hospital for Ireland.
