Supporting, developing and valuing the NHS Workforce: 3rd NHS Workforce Congress:
Crippling staff shortages mean NHS employees are routinely being asked to do more with fewer resources as they desperately try to keep our health service afloat.
As well as increasing staff numbers the NHS needs to become a better place to work for NHS staff, we are currently facing a once in a generation workforce challenge, Governing Healthcare bodies and national leaders from across the UK are working closely together and have developed an interactive document that addresses the key Workforce enablers and sets a clear vision on how they would like the NHS workforce for the future to look,
- Valuing, supporting, developing and investing in NHS staff
- Improving leadership culture: Creating compassionate, Positive and improvement focused on a national scale to help improve leadership culture nationally
- Prioritising urgent action on nursing shortages: Acting now to address the nursing shortfall
- Developing a workforce to deliver 21st-century care: New roles, working initiatives and models of delivery will be implemented to innovate caregiving.
- Developing a new operating model for the workforce: interoperability and collaborative working will be at the forefront of these new changes
The NHS recently announced that £40m of investment is being made to help reduce NHS staff log in times which has been noted as the main technology frustration facing NHS staff, NHS staff currently have to log in to multiple computer programmes when tending to a patient, with each programme requiring its own login details. Some staff need to log into as many as 15 different systems.
We have identified some key policy updates including the £40m log in time investment that will be discussed at the Septembers event;
International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020: 2020 has been designated by the World Health Organisation as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife 2020, we will take time to celebrate our first-class nursing and midwifery departments and discuss how we can better support our nurses and midwives across the UK.
International Recruitment Toolkit: NHS Employers have developed a new toolkit designed to support colleagues involved in leading and delivering international recruitment in the NHS. This toolkit aims to encourage and enable good practices and processes for the recruitment of staff across a wide range of professions. Health providers can use this resource to plan their approach to overseas recruitment activity for the first time or to review the quality and efficiency of their existing practices and processes.
Improving workforce planning and intelligence: NHS Leeds Teaching Hospital developed and implemented an integrated workforce system with the aim of providing one source channel, which, was consistent and robust to support informed management decision-making. The programme had positive results and Leeds is currently working on the next steps and are developing a line manager portal to further improve data flows.
September’s Supporting Developing and Valuing Staff: NHS Workforce Congress will also host a Mental Health & Wellbeing panel debate, this will be an opportunity to get involved in the debate on wellbeing in the NHS workforce and what steps are needed to ensure we are building a happy and healthy workforce for future generations.
Attendance will provide delegates with the following benefits:
- Listen to the latest policy developments and live best practice sharing sessions
- Input directly to the discussions and panel debate sessions
