The NHS is giving patients greater control and convenience in their NHS hospital or clinic appointments – by offering telephone or video consultations, empowering people to book their own follow-up care, and working with GPs to avoid the need for an onward referral where possible.

This means less time travelling to hospital appointments and in waiting rooms, and better access to follow-up hospital care when needed. The planet also benefits from reducing the NHS’s carbon footprint and contributing to congestion on the roads.

Outpatient waits make up more than 70% of the NHS referral to treatment waiting list, so it is necessary to accelerate existing and new outpatient initiatives to ensure patients are treated more quickly. As part of the ongoing work around elective recovery, Super September has been created to help focus Provider outpatient activity on the patients who have the longest waiting times. Super September is part of a broader series, Action on Outpatients, where NHS will provide opportunity and support for systems to consider creative and innovative ways to delivery elective recovery and the way health services are delivered.

E-catapult have been working with the NHS in Gloucestershire to pilot the ‘Warmth on Prescription’ programme, an innovative service designed by Energy Systems Catapult and delivered by charity Severn Wye. Health workers can prescribe ‘warmth’ to vulnerable patients, meaning the health service pays their energy bills to make sure they stay warm and well at home, and without visiting their GP or hospital. It’s more cost-effective to pay for these vulnerable people’s heating costs than it is to pay for their care if they fall ill – it saves the NHS money overall and reduces pressure on frontline staff. The project, which created a new model of care where primary and secondary care (GPs and hospitals) work together as one clinical network, was developed by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust together with Meridian Health Group.
