Virtual wards: Story so far and what’s next
Delivering the national virtual wards strategy
NHS England and NHS Improvement have published guidance to support all Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) with virtual ward programmes.
The guidance, entitled supporting information for ICS leads: enablers for success: virtual wards including hospital at home comes in support of NHSEI asking all ICSs to extend or introduce the virtual ward model. The document aims to support strategic and financial decisions, and the planning and implementation of the model.
We're pleased to be presenting a case study of the London wide, transformation of perioperative care spanning the region's Heart Centres.
We'll cover transformation, pathway re-design and automation, plus the implementation of technology innovation, new SOPs and workforce practices. It's all focussed on preventing unnecessary admissions, identifying & taking action for patients at risk, and facilitating early discharge. A practical walkthrough of real world problems and solutions.
Developing Digital and AI Literacy in the health workforce
The presentation will provide an overview of the processes and tools that Health Education is utilising to develop the digital readiness required for the provision of contemporary care.
It will explore the definition of digital literacy and the resources available to the workforce for their development.
It will further examine ongoing work in the Digital, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technology in Education -DART- ED to provide the workforce with appropriate level of knowledge and skills in this area.
These topics will be closely linked to implications for care provision in virtual wards.

Enhancing peri-operative care through virtual wards: Findings from an interim analysis
This presentation gives an overview of a hugely successful Virtual Ward service which commenced in the early stages of the COVID pandemic.
The ability to utilise elements of a virtual ward environment ensured that our most vulnerable COVID positive patients could be managed in their home environment, reducing the risk to themselves and the need for hospital admission.
The service has been a core and integrated element of our countywide red hub and visiting service and COVID medicines delivery unit. Patients are provided with an information pack, following a clinical assessment, which includes a pulse oximeter and receive planned telephone consultations by an Advanced Practitioner.
At the height of the pandemic the virtual ward was caring for more than 150 patients and continues to observe very positive outcomes in ensuring any deterioration is recognised early and patients feel supported during their illness.
